Road Trip

Posted: February 25, 2014 in Uncategorized

I love to get together with a group of guys and go shoot each other in the woods. It’s not as bad as it sounds, so just stick with me.

I get up really early on a Saturday morning, the sun’s only been up for a couple hours or so. I open up my mini man cave, which is really just an old cedar chest at the bottom of our bed, and I smile as I take in the glorious view.

I pull each item out as though it were an ancient artifact. I lovingly wipe the dust from my paint spattered mask. I pull out my chest protector and a smile of pride breaks out across the landscape of my face. I touch each dried, faded paint stain, remembering where I received each one.

My memory wants to play out each scenario, but I resist the urge. There is not enough time. Jimmy will be here soon, followed by Matt and Ryan and whoever else they could rustle up.

I continue my treasure hunt. I find my camo pants and jacket, my boots and co2 tanks. I pull out my elbow and knee pads and there on the bottom, I see my babies. My heart races a bit as I reach for the chrome plated gun case. I lift it out carefully and lay it on my bed.

I unlatch the clasps and raise the lid. There before me, in all their glory, two sleek black automatic Tippman paintball guns. I upgraded the barrels and they look awesome. I turn each one over in my hands, admiring them as I inspect them. This never gets old. Every time I hold them, it feels like the first time. I vividly remember having the same feeling each time I held one of my newborn children for the first time. Okay maybe we don’t mention this part to my wife.

I absolutely live for these weekends where we dress up like Marine, SWAT, Green Beret, Navy Seal, Chuck Norris, Cobra Commando, Ninja dudes, and trek through the woods playing out our war games. We set up camps and cook over a fire like manly men.

After I had put on all my gear, I was ready to go. I was especially excited about this particular trip because we were going to a new spot Jimmy had told us about.

Jimmy and the guys showed up, 7 in all, looking just as cool as could be. Camo overkill was the fabric of the day.

We loaded the last of the supplies into my Jeep and were ready to hit the road. I informed Jimmy I just had to grab my GPS and I was good to go. He assured me I would not need it, I could just follow him.

Jimmy was a country boy and had lived in the backwoods of Walker Louisiana for most of his life. He could hunt, fish, rock climb, hike and mountain bike like nobody I’d ever met. He was a born leader. It seemed there was nothing he could not do. He was fearless to boot.

We were about two hours into a five hour trip when Jimmy slowed up at a tricky three way intersection on a back road. “Is he lost?” I wondered aloud. Ryan snorted, “Are you kidding? It’s Jimmy. He could find Jimmy Hoffa’s body if he wanted too.”

Jimmy paused only a moment, then took the road to the right. Good thing I’m not leading. Everything looked the same. Trees lined both sides of the road and were so densely packed together even the sun had trouble penetrating the canopy.

We drove on this curvy, sometimes dirt road, for about an hour and came upon a fork in the road. Once again Jimmy slowed for a brief second, then headed left.

It got darker the deeper we headed into the woods. About another hour passed and Jimmy slowed and pulled over. I pulled to a stop behind him. He got out and headed toward my Jeep. The look on his face said it all. He, we were lost.

How could we be lost? Jimmy is a country boy. He knows everything. We all put our faith in him and now we were all lost. I was upset with myself because I had a GPS, but I didn’t bring it.  I thought I could put my trust in Jimmy to get us to our destination. I could not put all the blame on Jimmy. I chose to put my trust in him. I chose to leave my GPS at home even though it never failed me. Now I wondered if we would even make it to our destination…

It does not matter what happens next in this story because it is fictional. But there is a very real situation where this is happening daily, in churches all over the United States.

We put our faith in a charismatic leader, a pastor, a man. Many mega churches put their pastors on pedestals. They “worship” his slick “rock star” personality and look to him and only him, to guide them in their spiritual walk.

They have a GPS but do not consult it. They don’t think it’s necessary. They have this man to lead the way. They take every word he speaks as sacred truth. Even when things seem off sometimes, they don’t question him, mainly because the atmosphere in the church does not allow his character to be questioned.

The GPS that would have prevented the situation in my story was ignored. The GPS that churches are ignoring is God’s Personal Spirit. We blindly follow a man instead of the Holy Spirit, and while I mentioned mega churches, this behavior happens in churches of all sizes. It just makes the news more often when it is a mega church. When we follow a pastor who is out to promote himself instead of Jesus, you are following someone who is lost. You end up with the scenario from my story, because when we follow someone headed in the wrong direction, we end up lost ourselves.

Read how Paul handled a situation in which people tried to put him on a pedestal in 1 Corinthians 1:10-17 or in Acts 14:1-19. Do not let yourself be fooled. If they do not point to Jesus do not follow them.

2 R Better Than 1

Snowed In

One snowflake does not a blizzard make. One lone solitary snowflake will not send the masses scrabbling to the store to buy large quantities of milk, bread, and eggs. One snowflake is seemingly insignificant. One tiny little frozen H20 particle will not cause alarm or close schools. One snowflake will likely go unnoticed.

But what happens when that snowflake bans together with a few billion more? They become a force to be reckoned with. They can shut a city down, bring major transportation to a stand still, and put smiles on the faces of thousands of school students.

One snowflake can be ignored. Millions cannot be. One snowflake fluttering to the ground melts quickly without much fanfare. Alone he does not stand a chance of doing much. But when he is united with likeminded snowflakes bent on covering the landscape, they come in power and accomplish much. They can transform a barren wasteland into a beautiful winter wonderland in a relatively short period of time.

Working together towards a common goal achieves greater results for their cause than working alone. A single snowflake is weightless. Millions together carry the weight to collapse roofs and snap tree branches.

So What’s My Point?

You are a snowflake. Okay maybe not, but like a single snowflake, your effect in your community will be minimal. Your voice for truth can be drowned out in a chorus of lies. But wen you come together with a group united and determined to make a difference in their community, you are not easily dismissed.

People Take Notice

If you rode your bike through your town on a Saturday afternoon you would not even be noticed. You would blend into your everyday surroundings. But if several hundred of your friends formed a flash mob and rode hundreds of bicycles through your town, you would cause quite a stir. People would break out their cell phones and take video. The crowds would wonder what was going on. What are you up to? They simply could not ignore you.

What if each one of you had the same shirt on, featuring a specific website? How many people do you think would immediately look up that site? How many of those people would go on to tell their friends and family about what they witnessed that day? How many of those people would post their videos to Facebook and Youtube?

This is why it is important for you to come together as the Church. The Body of Christ. Many people, young and old have told me they do not see the importance of church in their lives today.

Without the Church you stand alone. Like the single snowflake that quickly melts, the solitary Christ follower tends to melt under temptation and turn from God quickly.

2 R Better Than 1

That was King Solomon’s tweet on things. Let’s check out Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how will they keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.

When your community encounters a group of sold out followers of Christ, determined to impact the people in their community for the cause of Christ, they will not be able to ignore you. Your actions will be noticed and the results undeniable.

Like the bike riders in my story, wearing the same shirts, your Church, clothed together in Christ’s message of love, come in power with enough weight to bring down Satan’s strongholds in people’s lives.

Don’t be a lone wolf. Travel with your pack

Once Upon A Time

Posted: February 18, 2014 in Uncategorized

We all love a good story. Especially ones filled with drama and action. We love to be sucked in. We are emotional creatures and when we are connected to the story we feel for the characters. When danger pops up for our hero, our heartbeat races a little faster. When our characters face loss we cry for them. But what separates a really good story from the mediocre?

Conflict

Conflict has long been recognized as the engine of the story. Without conflict, we quickly lose interest and become bored. Bored movie goers do not equal box office millions and 3 sequels. So what is the secret formula for success in every blockbuster movie or New York Times bestselling novel?

Zero to Hero

Catalyst for growth of some kind propels our average Joe into the hero of the story. It works in all genres. We watch and cheer for our hero as he grows and develops when overcoming challenges that he faces head on.

When he comes out the other side, he has changed. He will never again be the same. He is stronger, wiser, more confident for having overcome the very thing that tried to break him. Through this epic journey he learns something about himself that he never dreamed of. He accomplishes things he never thought possible.

Epic Trilogies

It’s the thing of Legends. Hollywood is great at churning out mega hits time and again with this proven formula. Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Star Wars, the list goes on and on. What do each of these money makers have in common? What keeps us on the edge of our seats and makes us gladly part with upwards of $15.00 per ticket and 800.00 for a large popcorn?

Advancement Through Adversity

Webster defines adversity as the following:

Difficulties, misfortune, hardship, distress, disaster, suffering, affliction, sorrow, misery, tribulation, woe, pain, trauma…

Raymond Chandler, the best selling author once said, “Trouble is my business.” He put his characters in dire situations and we hung on to every word and cheered our hero on. We invested our emotions into the life of these fictional characters.

The goal of any writer is to keep readers turning pages. Hollywood wants you to keep packing out darkened movie theaters. Whether it’s novels or movies, conflict makes that happen.

Viewer Not Victim

We get it. We love to read novels or watch movies about people just like us who are challenged with insurmountable odds and yet somehow overcome and become greater than they ever dreamed possible. We sit united, in a dark movie theater, with hundreds of strangers, cheering for the underdog. We simply cannot get enough…

Until we are faced with trials. We forget about the growth we could accomplish. The triumphs, the transformation from mediocre to greatness.

We want to crawl under a rock and throw ourselves a pity party. We throw in the towel, blame God and walk away from Him. We convince ourselves life was better before we put our trust in Jesus.

We Question Everything

Why is this happening to me? I go to church. I pray. I read my Bible. Why is God doing this to me?

These are the wrong questions. We need to ask, what does God want me to learn from this? How is God developing my character through this trial? How is God strengthening my faith through this ordeal? How will God use this situation for His Glory?

God is in control, even when we think He is asleep at the wheel.

In The Storm

Let’s take a minute to look at a story from scripture as an example of how God used a potentially bad situation to strengthen his followers faith and glorify God.

Mark 4:35-41

That day when evening came, he (Jesus), said to the disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples, (I’m sure, frantic), woke him and said, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the waves, “Quiet! Be still.” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to the disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have so little faith?”  They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this?  Even the wind and the waves obey him!?

Don’t Lose Faith

The disciples had witnessed Jesus perform many miracles, but in a moment of trouble, they forgot the power of Jesus.

When we face storms in our lives, sometimes it might seem like Jesus is sleeping and we are drowning in our troubles. Like the disciples, we may have seen the power of Christ in our lives and witnessed his deliverance in the past but when faced with a terrible situation we forget those times. In fear we doubt Jesus ‘ ability to see us through.

If it was not for the storm, the disciples would not have witnessed the power of Jesus when he calmed the  storm. Their faith grew that day.

The next time you face your own storm, before you are filled with fear and doubt, go to the Lord and ask him to calm your storm and to show you what he wants you to learn from it.

Remember when you are in the storm

Jesus is in the boat with you.

A Word From Jesus

Posted: February 5, 2014 in Uncategorized

Hey Guys it’s been a while since I was walking the earth and lots of things have changed so I figured it was time to update some of the things I told you about. I’m going to briefly cover a variety of issues so try to bear with me.

First the issue of building my church. I did a lot of things differently back then but I was just winging it. We had never done church before. I had this crazy idea rattling around in my head about my people being the church. I also thought having small gatherings in multiple locations was the more effective approach. But I have read many great books on church growth and development and I see that I have to reconsider some of the things I instructed you on in this area.

Bigger is Better. It portrays the image of being successful. My church consisted of only 120 people and we met in a small room on the second floor of a bakery. Boy was I off base. When constructing your church buildings make sure your budget includes a generous amount for a sic sound and lighting system. I suggest you hire an architect and top notch designer. We want to appeal to the masses and pull them in by the thousands.

I want the children’s ministry rooms to look like Disney World, only better, cause that’s how I roll. Be sure to include all the latest gaming consoles such as PS4 and XBOX One. I recommend 60 inch flat screens as when playing 4 player games each screen will provide ample viewing. These children are coming to be entertained and we don’t want to disappoint.

As far as seating throughout the church, I want seats so comfy, people could fall asleep in them. Make sure your foyer has a kicking coffee bar filled with delicious pastries. Starbucks is kicking our butt in this department. Remember mood lighting and artwork create cozy atmosphere. Your designer will explain this.

As far as a preaching staff, I want the best speakers money can buy proclaiming my message. If you can’t find a top notch leader consider a video feed from another location. There are books available on this subject. Make sure they are trained professionals with appropriate degrees and credentials, I don’t want people trying this at home. They confuse people if they don’t have all the answers.

If you follow this plan jaws should hit the floor when people step into your buildings. Spare no expense. I know you are going to have critics complaining that there are starving children in some foreign country dying every day and that this money could be used to feed them and provide medication. Don’t let it get you down. No matter what you do in life, someone will criticize you. Remember they criticized me they will criticize you. It’s part of being a Christian.

Now I want to address the whole “Love your enemies” debacle. Wow was that a public relations nightmare. When I preached that sermon, I had no idea how stupid people would become. So if someone makes you mad you have my complete blessing to rip them apart in a Facebook status. I don’t blame you one bit. I mean seriously, right?

And while we are on the subject, you probably read about how I spent time with sinners, drunks, prostitutes, demon possessed…etc. let me just say this, BIG MISTAKE. These people have problems. They will consume your life and pull you away from the real business of the church. Not to mention I got persecuted every time I had a meal with one of them. Stay away from these people. They’re needy and they don’t give money. They will take up seats that tithing customers could sit in. And we know the electric bill won’t pay itself don’t we. As far as preaching my message let’s steer clear of talking too much about sin. This is a real Debbie downer and tends to send people packing. Focus on Jeremiah 29:11 You can never go wrong with this feel good message. Tell them to say a little prayer about being sorry and things will be great between us. They don’t even need to change the way they are living. If you put too much on people they won’t want to come to church and like I already said, that electric bill ain’t gonna pay itself.

I’m not too concerned with how they are living their lives Monday through Saturday. They can do whatever they want but come Sunday I want to hear some singing and praising my name, as long as it sounds great though. If they have a bad voice let them be ushers or diaper changers in the nursery.

I know I said do not have a hint of impurity in your life, but then I did not know Hollywood would be making movies in the future. Yes they glorify adultery, murder, rape and are filled with vulgar words and all kinds of things that appear evil, but it’s just entertainment right? It’s not like you think it’s real. You’re just relaxing. You deserve a little down time. Just ask me to forgive you every time you view it if it makes you feel better.

To all you business owners and employees. I wanted to clear something up. If you have a business or work to support your family I do not expect you to stand up for your faith in me or mention my name at work. People will boycott your business and cause you financial hardships. You certainly did not sign on to this Christian life for that. You signed on for the abundant life package. As for you employees, I do not want you to get fired so just go along with things. I know your heart. Here’s an example. If someone is telling an inappropriate joke, go ahead just laugh. I know you don’t really find it funny. I just don’t want them to think you are weird or something worse. If your co-workers are bad mouthing your boss or talking behind another co-workers back, please join in. It will be awkward if you don’t. We both know you don’t mean it but it will save face with your peers.

Praying over your meal is ok…if you are at home. Do not do this in public. People will think…well I don’t know what they will think so just don’t do it. If you feel you must thank me but don’t want those around you to know, try this. Drop your napkin on the floor and while you bend over to retrieve it just close your eyes and squeeze out a quick TY4 this food. I’ll consider it a prayer tweet. It will be our little secret. See “living” this “Christian life is not as hard as you thought. I don’t expect much.

Even giving is easy. I know you have bills to pay and a 500.00 a month car payment. I don’t wanna leave you with nothing, how you gonna pay your 200.00 per month cable bill? Here’s a trick. When the collection plate is coming take five one dollar bills and wrap a ten dollar bill around them. Fold it twice. Those around you will think you are dropping a hundred bucks. It’s really only $15.00 You spend that in 2 days at Starbucks so we cool. They don’t need to know what you are giving. That’s between you and me.

Well if there is anything I left out you can just touch base with me tonight in the few seconds before you fall asleep. I just love those 5 seconds we spend together daily. It’s the quality not the quantity. It’s the highlight of my day.

Zombie Church

Posted: August 8, 2013 in Uncategorized

Have You Been Infected?

Every Sunday, unsuspecting churches all over America are invaded by Zombies. Yes, even yours. You may even be one of these Zombies. No one is immune.

How can this be? You shake your head in disbelief thinking, Zombies are not real.

Not only are they real, but Jesus warned us about a Zombie Outbreak over 2000 years ago. Not only did we do nothing to prevent it, we quietly sat and watched the epidemic infect our nation.

In Revelation, Jesus warned: “I know your deeds; you have a reputation for being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strenghten what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.” (Revelation 3: 1-2 NIV)

He was not speaking to some evil empire, He was speaking to a church in Sardis. People who claimed to serve Him. His followers. People who thought they were alive, but in reality were DEAD in the eyes of Jesus.

Sounds like Zombies to me, so I looked up the definition of a Zombie and this is what I found:

Zombie: The body of a dead person/ semblance of life, but mute and will-less. When the body refuses to live.  person whose behavior or responses are wooden, listless, or seemingly rote, automaton. Condition of being a Zombie, or Zombification is contagious. They are infected and are infectious.

The Infection

What are the characteristics of a Church Zombie?

They do not accomplish anything

They do not produce anything (spiritual fruit)

They have a hunger for things of the flesh

They wonder around and consume everything. Takers not givers

They are a corrupt and destructive force that taints all that come in contact with them

They act like they are alive, but they are dead

They are disconnected from the Spirit of God

They spread the virus of passivity or worse

They attend church because it’s what they are supposed to do

They do not tithe

They do not read the Bible

They do not pray

They do not really love their neighbor

They are complainers and drainers

They are pew warmers

If your heart does not reflect Jesus you are a ZOMBIE

There are hundreds of thousands of Zombies limping into churches all over the world every Sunday morning. It is an epidemic of epic proportions.

You may even be infected but unaware, because unlike Hollywood’s ghoulish looking Zombies, Church Zombies look and sound just like the uninfected.

The difference is in their walk and their behavior. The most telling signs of the infected, their actions or the lack thereof.

If you feel you have been infected, don’t panic. There is a vaccine.

Tune in here 08/10/13 for more information. Until then, stay inside, lock your doors and read your Bible.

This has been an emergency broadcast from the Church in Sardis. This is an actual emergency. Stay tuned for more———————————————-

Marketing Guru

So Eve was the first one to ever market a product. Even though she was just a beginner, she had the secret of selling down pat, because Satan was her sales coach.

Here’s The Scene:

Adam’s chillin’ and he looks up from his video game and here, standing before him, his perfect, beautiful…naked wife and she’s holding an apple pie

Do you think he said to himself, I’m not supposed to eat the apple, so I better say no.

Not a chance. He was too busy looking for the vanilla ice cream

Satan used Eve, Adam’s wife, to distract him from the truth. If Satan would have come to Adam with his Halloween devil costume on and said, “Adam, eat this apple so you will be forever separated from God, get kicked out of this sweet garden, have to work hard all the rest of the days of your life, and oh yeah, die.”

What do you think Adam’s response would have been? Certainly not, “Where’s the whipped cream?”

Cracks In Your Armor

Satan knows your weaknesses. For guys, it just happens to be naked woman holding pastry.

Satan does his homework. Only God can read our minds but Satan studies our habit to interpret our thoughts.

He analyzes our behavior and body language. He plays with possible scenarios and predicts possible outcomes. He is smart and cunning. His flawless strategy fells many.

He has been at this game for a long time. As a matter of fact, he invented it. The name of his game, Deception, Death, and Destruction. The original 3D game. The problem with this game…there are no winners, ever

Winning

Like Charlie Sheen, you make think you are winning, and still be totally losing. It’s like playing the game Chutes and Ladders. You start off great, you are cruising up the ladders, leaving everyone in the dust. You quickly advance all the way to the top. Commence, Smack Talking.

The finish line is in sight. Victory is within your grasp…then the bottom drops out, literally. You land on a slippery slide to the bottom. You are devastated. You never saw it coming. You just didn’t think it could happen to you. You gambled with the odds and lost.

This is not a big deal, it’s just a game, (okay, so it was a big deal for me). It is however a big deal with terrible consequences in real life, for you and me.

Coming to the end of your life, only to discover you have been tricked and deceived by Satan, is inconceivable.

One way Satan distracts you from the truth is by convincing you that being a good person is enough to earn a ticket to Heaven. Satan quoted scripture when he tried to tempt Jesus and he uses religion today. Religion tells you all the things you should not do. It lists all the right things you are suppose to do.

Go to church. Don’t steal. Give money. Don’t Curse. Be nice to people. Don’t lie. We get conditioned to believe our actions are enough.

We believe we will stand before God and He will drag all our deeds onto a big scale. If the good outweighs the bad, you’re in.

Religion becomes man’s attempt to appease God. This is Satan’s best trick. He has used it millions of times for thousands of years.

Whenever you start to think there might be a problem, Satan points out your neighbor Stan and whispers, “Come on, you ain’t as bad as Stan. Remember you went to church last Sunday? Stan ain’t never been to church. And don’t forget you tossed five bucks into the offering plate just last month.

You listen to the little voice and go on feeling pretty good about yourself.

I Never Knew You

Let’s see what Jesus has to say about your good deeds.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in Heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and preform many miracles?’ Then I will say to them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me you evildoers.” (Matthew 7:21-25)

Gives new meaning to the phrase, No good deed goes unpunished.

Be Prepared

How do you get prepared? Read the Word. Satan has not changed. Satan has not changed his M.O. in ten thousand years. If you know how he rolls, you can shut him down.

I think my wife’s baking apple pie. Gotta Go!

Counterfeit Benjamin

I went to the bank once with my friend so he could cash his check; then we stopped by a store so he could get a few things. When it came time to pay for his goods, he handed the cashier a hundred dollar bill. She rubbed her fingers over it and made a face. It was not a good face.

She proceeded to hold it up to the light. She turned it over and over in her hands. She studied that bill like there was going to be a quiz. She even sniffed it.

My buddy asked if there was something wrong. She informed him the bill was counterfeit. We didn’t believe it. My friend objected and told her he had just gotten it from the bank, so there was no way it was counterfeit.

That’s when she broke out her marker and settled things. It was indeed a counterfeit.

Schooled

My friend was incredulous and, I have to admit, so was I. How could this convenience store clerk spot a fake hundred dollar bill when a bank teller could not?

Aren’t bank tellers like professional money handlers or something? They are around money all day. Shouldn’t they be the first ones to spot a counterfeit?

McDonald’s sends their employees to Hamburger University to learn how to put a slab of beef between two pieces of bread. Shouldn’t tellers have to go to Phony Money University or the College of the Real McCoy? I mean seriously…right?

I had to know what made her the Qualified Queen of Counterfeit Cash. She proceeded to explain.  She had worked at her father’s store when she was younger. Her father worked many hours to make ends meet but they still struggled. Occasionally she would get hit with a counterfeit bill and her father would become upset with her.

She determined that it would never happen again. She studied the bad bill religiously. The feel and texture of the paper. The color of the ink. The way light shone through the paper. In time she could tell a bill was counterfeit the second it was placed in her hands.

She proudly proclaimed, “I never got stuck with a bad bill again.”

Too bad my friend could not say the same.

So It Got Me Thinking

How come the bank teller was not as passionate as Sally (we learned her name) was about spotting counterfeit money?

This is the conclusion I came to: Sally had a personal stake in the ability to determine whether a bill was fake or not. If she had continued to be fooled by the bad bills, her family business would suffer, her father would be disappointed with her, and she would probably lose her job. Learning how to spot phony money directly benefited her.

But more importantly, she had made a decision. She had taken a stand. This was never again going to happen to her. She would be the Victor not the Victim.  She not only made that declaration but she followed it up with action. She took the steps necessary to learn everything she could about spotting fakes. She told us she also spent quite a bit of time studying and examining real money. In fact, she shared with us, she had spent considerably more time studying the genuine article.

Imposters

False teachers are just as real as fake money. The trick is knowing when someone is trying to deceive you. But is it really a trick? Was Sally’s discovery of the counterfeit one hundred bill a trick?

Sally had taken the necessary steps to condition herself to become an expert in the field of identifying counterfeit money. Being informed is not a trick. Knowing what to look for is the key to success. An intimate understanding of the genuine article hinders an imposter’s ability to deceive you.

What Big Teeth You Have, Granny

I’m sure you’ve heard the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood. The wolf eats granny, slips into her pajamas, and hops into bed. In the story, Red sees right through the costume. But that is not always the case in real life.

Luke, the writer of the Book of Acts warns us:

I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away the disciples after them. So be on guard! (Acts 20:29-31)

And Jesus warned, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, (or dressed as granny), but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.”

The wolf in the fairy tale was easy to spot. He had more hair than granny. More teeth than granny. And he had big feet. But how are we supposed to spot the wolves?

Red Riding Hood knew the answer. She knew what her real granny looked like.

This blog was previously published but re-written for a teen audience.

We all know what that means…a test. I don’t know about you, the only test I like is an open book test. Those are always easy for me, because the answers are right in front of me. It’s a no brainer.

In Matthew Chapter 4 we see that Jesus was tested as well. “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the DEVIL . After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” (Matthew4: 1-3)

Time To Bake The Bread

I don’t know about you but I’d be putting on an apron and making me some bread. But not Jesus. He knew the right answer. If you were paying attention yesterday, so do you.

Jesus answered, “It is written; ‘Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it written: “He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'”

I’d be like, in your face Satan and I’d swan dive into the angels arms.

But not Jesus. Again he knew the right answer.

Jesus answered him, “It is written: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'”

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I give to you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

Jesus had enough of Satan’s nonsense.

Jesus said to him, “Away from me Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.””

Then the devil left him and the angels came and attended him.

Method To His Madness

The devil did not come to Jesus in his moment of strenght. When Jesus was being baptized and his Father, God was praising him. When the Holy Spirit was floating down on him like a dove.

The devil knew he had no chance of getting Jesus to sin. Satan knew Jesus would not fall for his tricks. Not when he was so close to the Father. He waited for Jesus to be at his weakest moment, his lowest period in his life.

It’s also important to note that when Satan was tempting Jesus, he was using scripture. He know the word of God better than most of us. He has fooled many people with this technique.

Satan Means Well Right?

Just imagine if you had not eaten for 40 days and 40 nights, we can’t even go 40 minutes sometimes, without snacking. Imagine roaming around in the heat of the barren, hostile desert without food for over a month. Your body, frail and exhausted, every step a monumental effort. Your mind unable to think straight. Your laser focus; GET FOOD NOW!

That’s when Chef Satan makes his move. That’s when he puts out the spread, the all you can eat buffet. Prime rib, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, baked lasagna, and roast beef. Just the smell of the savory aroma causes you to salivate. And what’s this? An entire table of cakes and pies.

You would do anything to devour this delectable smorgasbord of awesomeness. I’m getting hungry just writing about it and I just had lunch 20 minutes ago.

This is when Satan knows he has a chance of snaring you. When you are weak and starving, craving sustance, broken and alone. He will bring all the things YOU think YOU need to restore yourself.

How can this be bad, right? It’s only food. It looks amazing and smells so good and you are starving. Satan is just trying to help…right? Maybe he ain’t so bad after all. People have just misunderstood him. They’ve been misinformed.

Before you know it, you’re caught up in his trap. Only after you have put your trust in him, do you find the food is rotting and full of maggots.

How was Jesus able to resist the temptations? How come he did not fall for it? Jesus did not fall into Satan’s trap because he was close to the Father through His word. Jesus used scripture to counter Satan’s attack. Jesus had hidden the Word in his heart. To him, it was an open book test. He had memorized the answers. A test is always easier when you are prepared. Remember a test is not meant to teach you something, it’s to see what  you’ve already learned.

Study to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

(2 Timothy 2:15)

If I offered to take you to dinner and gave you the choice of either The Outback Steak House or Burger King, most of you would choose The Outback for obvious reasons. Better Quality food, atomsphere, a 20 oz. New York Strip steak, etc.

But what if I took you to Burger King , and after you filled up on a Whopper and fries, I said “Hey would you rather go to the Outback Steak House?” You’d probably be pretty upset. You’d wonder why I did not suggest the Outback first.

You’re too full now to enjoy a thick juicy steak and baked potato.  Forget about the Blooming Onion.

As you were enjoying your Whopper, you would have been happy and content. You would have been thinking wonderful thoughts about me for treating you to dinner

Only when you found out about what you could have had, would you become upset. You’d start to regret the Whopper and crisp golden fries. The food might begin to feel like a lead weight in your stomach. How could something that seemed so good at the time seem so bad now? What was the difference?

Knowledge

Knowing what you sacrificed for that Whopper and fries. The knowledge of what you could have had. The image of the sizzling steak and steaming baked potato, topped with piles of bacon and smothered in cheddar cheese is overwhelming.

You wish you could turn back time, take a do over, a mulligan. but you can’t. No matter how much you want that steak, there is just no room in your stomach.

Hungry As A Hostage

To truly enjoy a meal at the Outback Steak House, you need to be hungry. You need to have an empty stomach. You don’t eat at home before you go out to eat, at least not if you are smart. But there have been occasions where I went to my mom’s house for dinner and upon my arrival, was tempted by a triple chocolate cake she had baked. I’d take a big chunk against my mother’s sound advice; “You won’t have room for supper. Wait!”

I always assure her I’m so hungry, it won’t ruin my appetite. Guess who is always right.

I argue my point, “I never have room for dessert after dinner, so I’ll eat my dessert first. And please don’t act like you’ve never used that line before, cause we both know you have.

Being tempted by the cake is not the problem. The problem starts when I don’t resist the temptation. When I start reasoning with myself. I convince myself it won’t hinder my ability to eat the dinner my mother went through the trouble of preparing for me.

Salad = Sin

Okay maybe not. But the same thing happens when I go to the Olive Garden. Those evil people bring me a big bowl of salad and that little wicker basket filled with piping, hot buttery breadsticks, nestled is that crisp white linen blanket.

I devour 3 plates of salad and 4 breadsticks while I’m waiting for my Italian Trio of goodness to come. But then the waitress comes and asks, “Would you like some more salad and breadsticks?” And she is so polite I don’t want to hurt her feelings so I say, “Absolutely!” I mean what was I suppose to say?

Two more plates of salad and 3 breadsticks later, I can’t move unless I unbutton my pants.

Right on cue, my Trio of chicken parmesan, lasagna, and fettuccini alfredo arrives. The waitress smiles and asks, “Can I get you anything else?” I’m like yeah a box because I’m stuffed.

You can’t eat a loaf of bread and 2 heads of lettuce and exspect to polish off a boat sized plate of pasta. Your stomach needs to be empty.

What’s My Point?

So you may be wondering, Is there some Bible message in all this?

Actually, believe it or not, there is. Sure there is the obvious part about temptation but there is more to today’s message then the evils of being tempted. It’s about being filled up with the wrong stuff. It’s about not having room for the right stuff.

When Satan was tempting Jesus with food, Jesus was able to resist because he was already full.

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. ‘” (Matthew 4:4)

Jesus was quoting Old Testament scripture. He was filled with God’s word. Jesus filled himself with the things of his Father.

Knowledge of the scriptures gave Jesus the ability to resist the devil. He was filled with the right things.

Food For Thought

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Don’t Spoil Your Appetite

Illuminate: To provide or brighten with light. To enlighten intellectually or spiritually.

Where’s the Light Switch?:

If you are like me when I was young, you probably leave things laying around on the floor of your bedroom. For you, this may not pose a problem, but if you had lived in my house it would have been a different story. At least at night.

My lamp was on my nightstand, which was the most logical spot for it since I liked to read at night before bed.

Here’s the illogical part:

There was no light fixture in the ceiling and the light switch did not work the outlet my lamp was plugged into. This caused me to stumble through the dark to make my way over to my lamp. Here is where the real problem was. If I had things haphazardly spread across my floor, I tripped or stubbed my toe, or worse, I stepped on something extremely hard or sharp, in my bare feet.

You Can’t Fix Stupid:

I’ve heard it said, the definition of stupid is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It this is true, I was the poster child for STUPID. Each time I thought I could navigate the debris on my bedroom floor flawlessly and turn on my lamp unscathed. Every time I was proven wrong.

5 Bucks Equals No Pain:

I cannot count the times I said to myself “I should buy a flashlight” I could put it next to the door and use it to light my path. It’s not like they were expensive. It could have saved me a lot of pain.  Each time I convinced myself I didn’t need it. I’d tell myself I’d just keep my room clean. I convinced myself my eyes would adjust to the dark. I gave myself many reasons why I did not need the light. But in reality, I was living in denial.

5 Minutes Equals Less Pain:

Just like 5 bucks spent on a flashlight would light my path and guide me around the obstacles waiting to befall me, 5 minutes a day spent in God’s word will lighten the path in front of you and expose the traps Satan is setting for you.

Daily Ammo:

But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is the light that makes everything visible. (Ephesians 5:13-14)

Today’s blog is from my new book I’m working on as a follow up to REGENER8. It is titled Illumin8. I hope you like it. Leave me some feedback. Let me know your story. What traps has Satan set for you that looked like good things at first. How did you overcome them. Your story may end up in my book. If it does you will receive a free copy.
